Apache SpamAssassin 3.2.2 released!
July 28th, 2007
In our on-going efforts to break something in the stable branch every couple of months, we released Apache SpamAssassin 3.2.2 this week. It fixes a few bugs, including the inability to install SpamAssassin 3.2.1 via CPAN using sudo — at least for some Perl versions on some platforms. On some platforms with some Perl versions, most commonly Perl 5.6.1, spamd might not be able to setuid (ie., drop root privs) and proceed to continuously kill its children when they end up attempting to run as root. So if you want to upgrade to 3.2.2 make sure that you can run “make test” as root before installing the software. If make test as root fails you’d be best off waiting for 3.2.3.

Still no go for me installing 3.2.3 from CPAN using sudo with Perl 5.8.1. But I’ll keep trying!

I don’t believe that we’re aware of any remaining issues with running make test as root in SA 3.2.3. So… it’d be a good idea if you first brought the issue up on the SA users list (provide the output of “sudo make test” or the errors from your CPAN shell session) and then if it’s determined to be an new issue open a bug.

Yep…
I spent 8 hours getting 3.2.2 tweaked just how I like it, and a couple days later MailScanner forces an upgrade of SA to 3.2.3. For some reason 3.2.3 doesn’t like to read my local.cf, even though it passes lint.

bug 5519 is the only bug that came close to touching the code that has anything to do with what you describe.
Please provide a copy of the file you believe is being ignored and the complete output of spamassassin –lint -D as an attachment to a message in the thread you started on the SA users@ list.

Thanks for your help, it is appreciated. I did reply to you in that thread with the output from –lint -D. I’m done with the users list, however, due to the other rude responses I got.
I just downgraded back to v3.2.2, and everything works like a charm. Sent test “spam” to myself (based on a rule that wasn’t being caught under v3.2.3) and the custom rules are being tagged appropriately with the correct score.
So…what can I tell you. Thank you again, Daryl, for being polite, helpful and human. Sad state when you have to *thank* people for that, eh?

Pay no attention to the unhelpful comments you got on the list. One of the posters is actually responsible for some of the dumbest questions of the year.
I’ll check out your debug post now (and respond there, it’s much easier to figure things out on the mailing list than it is here)… I’ve only had time to check the lists after I come home for work (for the second time) each day lately.
I’d really like to identify what the problem is.

I will, thanks.
I’ve only had time to check the lists after I come home for work (for the second time) each day lately.
Keep that up, you’ll lose your “Lazy Engineer” badge
